Voices of the Southern Ocean: A Nipaluna (Hobart) Anthology

The City of Hobart is a leading supporter of our designation as a UNESCO City of Literature. It recognises storytelling as one of Hobart's defining strengths.

Hobart is also one of the world's key Antarctic Gateway cities. It is the southernmost capital in Australia, with a working deep‑water port that connects scientists, explorers and communities to the Antarctic and Southern Ocean.

This rare dual identity inspired us to collaborate with partners across the city to create Voices of the Southern Ocean: A Nipaluna/Hobart Anthology.

The anthology is the largest collection of Tasmanian literary voices ever published in a single volume. It brings together written works by more than 50 local authors and illustrators.

Each contributor reflects on their personal connection to the Antarctic and Southern Ocean – its vastness, its fragility, its creatures and its future.

The collection spans splash fiction, reflective prose, micro‑nonfiction and polar poetry. It offers a distinctly local perspective on the waters that lie just beyond our coastline.
