What (not) to say on animals (in zoos)

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary

Heidelberg City of Literature invited writers from different UNESCO Cities of Literature to identify an animal/s in their local 'zoo' and to write about it.

For Nipaluna (Hobart), we were looking for people with a connection to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary (definitely not a zoo).

The text could:

  • be about the personal relationship with an animal or species
  • also relate to:
    • issues such as animal rights
    • the question of nature writing
    • the relationship between human and animals or
    • the specific conditions of animals in Tasmania.

You were free to choose your own approach!

Heidelberg are selecting one text from each participating city for translation into German. This text will be presented online to the German audience once Heidelberg presents the results from the local project.
